SAMHI is a newly formed hospitality property company focused on the development, acquisition and ownership of select-service, business-class hotels across India. The Company has commenced development of properties in Bangalore, Chennai and Gurgaon with brands such as Courtyard and Fairfield by Marriott and Hyatt Place. In addition SAMHI has a pipeline of opportunities in the country’s top 20 markets including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata. SAMHI is co-sponsored by GTI Capital Group, a privately held investment firm focused on Indian and India-related businesses.
MARKET OVERVIEW
India is a fast-growing market with strong economic fundamentals and favorable demographics including projected GDP growth of more than 8% per year through 2018, and a rapidly expanding and urbanizing population of 1.2 billion people that is projected to be the largest in the world by 2030. There are already 42 cities in India with over 1 million inhabitants and it is estimated there will be nearly 70 such cities by 2030, at which point these cities are expected to generate 70% of the country’s GDP. Travel and tourism are expected to grow at rates similar to the economy (8-8.5% per year) and the hospitality sector is projected to double in size over the next 7 years. The hotel market for value-conscious business travelers in India is significantly underserved, with some of the lowest hotel penetration rates in the world.
